Story time: Why I started a blog just now?

Updated: Oct 24, 2021

Hey there! My name is Eva Gomez, also known as Evis. With this post, I want to welcome you to my blog, but I also want you to know me better. For this reason, I want to share with you why I decided to start a blog about fashion, beauty, lifestyle in 2019 and why it takes me so long to finally start it. And for the curious ones, later in this post, I will also explain why I chose “The Summer Kind Of Girl” as the name of this blog.

Why a Fashion, Beauty & Lifestyle blog?

My passion for fashion topics

I have been obsessed with fashion since I was a little kid. I remember making DIY clothes for my Barbie dolls and having my notebooks full of outfits drawings; I also remember watching “The Nanny” on TV and admiring Fran Fine’s outfits so much that I even tried to copy them with things I had at home. You also have to know that in primary school, I was the girl who chose clothing lessons instead of sports or any other “normal” extracurricular activity, Can you believe that?. Those are definitely some of my oldest memories related to fashion, however, my love for fashion does not end there. When I was 14, one of my closest friends asked me to design her Quinceañera* dress, I cannot describe in words how cool it was to see one of my drawings come to life, but it was from that moment that I knew that in the future I had to do something related to fashion.

Over the years, my love for fashion continued to grow, to the point that my dream was to become a fashion designer. Despite that, I ended up studying marketing, and don't get me wrong, I don't regret this decision, but I always knew that I needed to find a way to express my love for fashion. That is why I came up with the idea of having a fashion blog almost three years ago.

My relative new interest in Beauty and Lifestyle topics

Although my interest in beauty (skincare, makeup, and hair) and lifestyle (travels, fitness, cooking, etc.) began more recently than my love for fashion, they have become an important part of my daily life, this is why I would like to use this platform to share with you some helpful tips and tricks about these topics.

Why it takes me so long to finally start this blog?

“The World doesn’t need more fashion/beauty/lifestyle blogs”, “you are a little late in this game”, “nobody reads blogs anymore”, “only shallow people have blogs”...

I am not going to lie, for almost three years I was scared and I allowed all these thoughts (and so many more) to stop me from starting this blog. One of my biggest fears was not getting support from my friends, or people qualifying me as a superficial girl. However, one day I decided to ignore all these fears and finally start doing what I love no matter what.

Honestly, it was a very difficult step for me, but let me share with you 3 pieces of advice that helped me to overcome my insecurities and I hope they can be useful to you if you are going through something similar – not necessarily related to fashion or blogs, but with any dream you have.

  1. Transform fears into challenges. Instead of seeing every aspect in life as a “problem” take it as a challenge. I believe fears won’t disappear but I also believe it is worth facing them because the satisfaction of doing what you love is even greater.

  2. Be surrounded by positive people. Having in the life people that believe in you, rather than people than criticize you is key when you are trying to achieve a goal. Be thankful with these people and don’t be afraid to ask them for their advice when you need it.

  3. Don’t take personally any negative comments. This is perhaps the most difficult advice to follow, especially when these comments are coming from people you care. Despite I continue working on this point, I can recommend you to try to get something positive from every “negative” comment, remember that there is always room for the improvement.

And for the curious ones … Why “The Summer Kind of Girl”?

Thinking about a name for this blog was the hardest part after overcoming all fears and mental barriers. As a marketer, I know the importance of a good brand name, and that is why I was very worried about choosing the right one for this blog. At first, I asked my boyfriend to help me, but after several brainstorms, we didn’t find anything good enough. It was until one day, I was chilling at home when the name came into my mind without even planning it. I knew immediately that "The Summer Kind Of Girl" was the right name, not only because I come from a very warm city in Mexico (it's called Merida) and summer is my favorite season (I love summer outfits), but also because curiously, I have this phrase in my Instagram biography for over a year now, and I use this hashtag in almost every post. I am not only a summer kind of girl, but I am THE Summer Kind Of Girl, I definitely couldn't find a name that suits me better!

Lastly, I want to thank you for reading my first post, and I also want to encourage you to send me your tips and good vibes in the comment section below.
