Shopping Guide: 6 essential tips to survive Sales

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

Every year, most brands offer their biggest discounts during seasonal changes, which means a good opportunity to renew your wardrobe and buy other non-clothing items you want. However, with such attractive deals and discounts everywhere, you can end up overspending on things that you may not need, for this reason, I prepared for you a short guide that contains 6 essential tips to make the most of sales, without becoming a victim of them.

Tip #1. Establish a budget and stick to it

Establishing a realistic budget is key to not end up with a huge debt that will compromise your liquidity in the coming months. For this, it is necessary to take into account not only your fixed monthly expenses but also consider an additional amount of cash for emergencies and other unforeseen expenses, in this way you can be sure that you are not spending more than you can afford.

Once you have established your budget, it is now very important that you stick to it. Please, don’t justify any deviation of this budget. If you don't have much self-control, I recommend you do what I do: take only cash to the stores.

Tip #2. Make a wish list and set priorities

To prepare your wish list, you should consider the budget you set earlier and include a more or less realistic amount of products for that budget. I recommend that you consider some of the following product categories when making your list:

  • Basic items. During the sales, you can restock the items you use most frequently, for example, underwear, pajamas, basic shirts, jeans, work clothes, etc. These products may not sound so interesting, but you should keep in mind that you need them anyway, so it is better to buy them now during sales than to pay more for them later.

  • Previous season items. For example, during January sales, you will find many attractive discounts on coats, cardigans, sweaters, scarfs, and other winter items, so it is a great opportunity to buy what you need not only for the rest of the Winter but also for the next one.

  • Accessories. If you are the type of person who generally prefers to spend on clothing rather than accessories, I get it, accessories can sometimes be as expensive as clothing, for this reason, sales are the perfect time to buy some basic accessories at a good price: shoes, bags, earrings, sunglasses, hair accessories, etc.

  • High-priced products. Sales are the perfect opportunity to buy that product with a high price tag you have been wishing for months, for example, high-end makeup, designer bags, etc. However, don’t forget to stick to your budget!

  • Gifts. You can also buy during the sales a couple of gifts for the upcoming events, for example, the Valentine's gift for your boyfriend/girlfriend, the mother's day gift for your mom, the wedding gift for your friend who is getting married this year, etc.

Once you have your list, you need to establish an order of priority. Ideally, place the products you really need at the top of your list and make sure they are the first ones you buy during your shopping adventure.

Tip #3. Shop smart

It is very important to be smart during sales, which means comparing different options in physical stores or on the Internet before buying. In this way, you will get the best deals and the best items for your money. If you are going to buy online, don't forget to consider shipping costs when making your comparisons.

Tip #4. Avoid impulsive purchases

This point may result very difficult because it is highly likely that you will find an extremely attractive discount on an item that is out of your list, if it is the case, you should analyze: 1) do I need that product or is only a whim? 2) Is there something on my list I can substitute for this new product? After asking yourself these two questions, I am quite sure you will make a good decision.

Tip #5. Check return policies

It is important to make sure you know the return policies before making any purchase since some stores don’t accept returns or exchanges on discounted items. To avoid future complications, ask the dependent about the policies of the store before paying, or be sure to read the fine print before the check-out if you are shopping online. However, you can also take into account the following precautions to avoid the need for returns:

  • Double-check if you picked up the correct size before paying for your product.

  • Check the general condition of the products before paying, don’t miss any details: zippers, buttons, fabric status…

Tip #6. Keep all your receipts in a safe place

My last advice to you is to keep all your receipts, as they will be useful to "count the damages" at the end of your shopping adventure and also in case you have to make a change or return later.

I hope you have found this post helpful and can apply these basic tips to make the most of your purchases during the January sales. Next week, I will share with you my top product recommendations to buy online during these sales, stay tuned!

Happy shopping, friends!
