10 tricks to make your Instagram pictures look cooler

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

As we all know, Instagram is a visual platform, which means to stand out from the crowd we must put extra effort into our photos. But don't worry, you don't have to be a professional in photography, there are some ways to make your Instagram photos more eye-catching and thus receive more "Likes" without having to be an expert. In this post, I want to share with you my most appreciated secrets for taking Insta-worthy photos. I invite you to continue reading to discover them!

1// Get inspired!

The first thing I recommend you do is to take inspiration from social networks like Pinterest, Tumblr, or Instagram itself. This is one of my favorite activities because it is like receiving a brainstorm that allows me to create my own unique and original ideas.

You can search for inspiration about locations, backgrounds, poses, props, outfits, etc. The important thing here is that you use this information and adapt it to your own style. Remember that the most original and creative photos are the best.

2// Find the perfect background for your photo

Here you have basically two options, either find an absolutely beautiful and stunning location or use your creativity to transform a dull and ordinary background into something really cool.

  • Cool locations

To find interesting locations for your photos, I suggest both doing a little research and being alert. Researching will allow you to find beautiful but famous places while staying alert will allow you to find unknown but highly instagrammable spots, which believe me are everywhere.

The best thing about finding a cool location is that it will do most of the work for you, which is great for those of us who are not very good at posing.

  • Ordinary backgrounds

It could be a plain wall, a spot in your house, or any conventional and ordinary space. In these types of shots, you must be very selective with the elements that you will include to make your photo look aesthetic. The latter means that you will have to do most of the work, but that is not a bad thing, it will allow you to use your creativity to find the best props, poses, angles, etc.

3// Select the perfect outfit

Thinking about the outfit you are going to wear is more important than you think. You must choose the styles and colors of clothing that best match the location and mood of your photo. For example, it is not the same to wear a neon green top in a photo with a cherry blossom tree as background, than to wear the same top in a photo with a graffiti wall as the background. Can you tell the difference?

4// Select props and accessories for your photos

As a next trick to make your photo look great, you must decide what props or accessories you want to include in it. The use of props and accessories is very useful to give life to a conventional background, level up your outfit, or simply to boost your confidence in front of the camera. Some common props ideas that you can include in your photos are your purse, your sunglasses, a hat, an umbrella, flowers, food, etc.

On the other hand, keep in mind that the use of props can add interest and character to your photo, but it could also destroy it if you use them excessively. I personally do not use props in all my photos, because sometimes I consider that they are not necessary.

5// Exploit your best features and angles

What do you like most about yourself? Share with the world that feature that gives you so much confidence. For example, if you like your smile, show it more often in your photos, if you like your legs, take more full-body photos, don’t hide your asset. Can you guess what my favorite feature is?* (Find the answer at the end of this article).

In addition to your favorite feature, you probably have a favorite angle or side; if so, take most of your photos from that angle, but don't forget to try others too, you might be surprised by the result.

6// Good lighting is key in photography

There is nothing better than taking advantage of natural light to have nice and well-lighted photos, however, there are times during the day, when the sunlight is too strong and can cause harsh shadows, which are not flattering at all. This is why the best times to take your photographs are: early in the morning, during the golden hour or on cloudy days.

7// Try candid photos too

Enjoy the moment! Ask the person taking your photos to take multiple photos while you're moving. Laugh, dance, sing, do silly things, be you! If you enjoy the moment instead of worrying too much about the result, I assure you that your photos will be more beautiful. Also, I have noticed that candid photos are a favorite of most people.

8// Try non-conventional angles

Trying different or unconventional angles will give your photo a more aesthetic look. Instead of taking the traditional photo that everyone takes, get creative, and discover an interesting angle. This technique is especially important when you are in a famous location, but it also works very well in little-known spots.

9// It takes several tries, so keep trying!

I know it can be frustrating when you have the perfect location, the perfect outfit, and everything else is perfect, but your photos don't turn out as you expected. If so, try different angles and poses until you are satisfied with the result. Remember that the perfect photo takes several tries, so be patient and keep smiling.

10// Edit your photo but don’t overdo it

My last secret for you is to edit your photo to enhance its beauty. For example, you can intensify some colors to make them pop, or you can add more contrast or texture to certain elements in your image. There is nothing wrong with using these tools, but remember that there is a fine line between enhancing your photo and making it look fake, so be careful with your edits because they could destroy a beautiful photo.

If you apply the above tricks you will notice an improvement in the quality of your photos and, consequently, in the level of engagement on your Instagram. So good luck and I read you in the comments.
